Wistly Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 22, 2026
Wistly ("Wistly," "we," "us," "our") is a cultural taste diary for film, music, and books. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. It applies to the Wistly app and getwistly.com. Wistly is operated by Satoshi Yamane, an individual based in Japan. Questions: privacy@getwistly.com.
Information we collect
Account information. When you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, Google account identifier, and profile image, as permitted by Google. We use this to create and secure your account.
Content you create. The works you log, your encounter notes and dates, star ratings, the works you ♥ (love), items you save to Waiting, and the collections you build.
Imported data. If you choose to import from another service, the items and history you bring in.
Information we derive. From your activity, Wistly computes a private model of your taste, a written "portrait," and personalized recommendations. These power your experience and are not shown to other users.
Technical and usage data. Standard server logs such as IP address, device and app version, and timestamps, used to operate, secure, and debug the service.
We do not request your contacts, photos, precise location, microphone, or similar device data.
How we use information
- To provide your diary, your taste portrait, recommendations, and features such as Wander.
- To personalize what Wistly suggests to you.
- To secure, maintain, debug, and improve the service.
- If needed, to send you important service-related notices. (Wistly does not currently send
marketing emails or push notifications.)
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it to show you third-party ads.
How information is processed and shared
We share information only with providers that help us run Wistly, under appropriate confidentiality and data-protection terms:
- Google — sign-in and authentication.
- Supabase — database and authentication hosting (data stored in Japan).
- Vercel — application and API hosting.
- Anthropic — we send taste-derived content (such as your taste signals, the titles of works,
and text you write) to Anthropic's Claude models to: generate your written taste portrait; produce the reasons shown behind recommendations; suggest names for smart collections; draft optional details when you add a work (title, creator, medium); and process the natural-language queries you type in search ("Ask"). We do not send identifiers such as your name, email, or account ID.
- Cultural metadata providers — TMDB, MusicBrainz/Last.fm, Open Library, and Odesli supply
information about films, music, and books. We send search terms (such as titles) to retrieve catalog data; we do not send your identity.
- Apple — app distribution. (If in-app purchases are added in the future, Apple will also
process payments.)
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect rights and safety, or in connection with a business transfer.
Where your data is stored
Wistly's database and servers operate in Japan (Tokyo region). If you use Wistly from outside Japan, your information will be transferred to and processed in Japan and in other countries where our providers operate.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your information while your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from the app's account settings. When you do, we delete your personal content and derived data immediately, and any associated caches and backups are purged within 30 days, except where we must retain limited records for legal, security, or accounting reasons. Aggregated or de-identified data that cannot reasonably identify you may be retained.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live (for example, the EEA/UK under the GDPR, or California under the CCPA/CPRA), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can exercise core rights directly in the app (edit or delete your content; delete your account) or by contacting privacy@getwistly.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
Security
We use measures such as encryption in transit and row-level access controls, so that you can only access your own data. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we work to protect your information.
Children
Wistly is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. We will post the new version with a revised "Last updated" date and, for material changes, provide additional notice in the app.
